Mufti Day for Georgia at St Benedict’s School

Friday October 10 saw St Benedict’s School transformed from the usual green/black uniforms to a riot of colour. It was Mufti Day. All who discarded their School uniforms paid £2 for that privilege and the money collected would go towards humanitarian aid for children in Georgia.

The specific project supported was to help provide basic but essential clothes and equipment for recently arrived children to Number 3 School in Gori, Georgia. The school and the local community had been devastated during the recent troubles and the number attending the school has been swelled by over a hundred displaced children from other parts of Georgia.

Mr Jennings, teacher of History, who has been involved with this project from the start and whose wife attended No. 3 School in Gori as a child, said “We can’t imagine what it is like to leave behind everything that you have, literally at a moment’s notice. These people need our help urgently.”

Sean Beirne and Stefan Koya, Year 13 students, were the main organisers.Stefan said “This is a real humanitarian crisis. These children had normal lives before, now many of them have nothing. Sean added “We take things like calculators in the classroom for granted. These children now dream about having a calculator. We hope that the generosity we have seen today and through future fundraising will help bring hope, friendship and a smile back to the faces of the many innocent young lives at No. 3 School.”
